About the Item

French Pair of 19th Century Chinese Export Porcelain vases Mounted in oil lamps Blue and White Chinese Export Porcelain decorated with lake and mountain landscape and cranes, village and figures, butterflies, and foliage in imitation of cloisonné enamel, embellished with Fô dog heads in applications and gilding highlights. Patinated Bronze Japonisme Mounts Circa 1870 Electrified Chinese guardian lions or imperial guardian lions, traditionally referred to in chinese simply as shi, and often referred to as Fô lions or Fô dogs in the West, are a common representation of the lion in imperial China. The statues of the guardian lions are traditionally located in front of the Chi-nois imperial palaces, the imperial tombs, the administrative buildings, the temples, the residences of the offi-cials and the upper classes since the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). We thought they had protective powers. They also appear in other artistic contexts, for example on knockers and pottery. Lions are usually represented by a pair, the male resting his paw on a decorated ball (which, in an imperial context, represents supremacy over the world) and a female holding a small, playful, located on her back (representing education). Fô dogs in ceramics Blue, celadon or white ceramic dogs, rarely polychrome, created in China in the Ming peri-od (1368-1644). Guardians of temples, they are the guarantors of the sustainability of the Buddhist religion. Their heads present, in a stylized way, features both leonins and canins. A ball, which symbolizes the treasures of Buddhist philosophy, is often inserted between the fangs of their open mouths. Many copies of dogs are imported into Europe where they are appreciated as beautiful decorative objects by their expressiveness.
