About the Item

What is it? — Ahh, the model 101. The one that put Jane and Gordon Martz and Marshall Studios on the map. To quote, "This was the watershed product for Marshall Studios, the Martz model No. 101, an exquisitely simple teardrop shape in matte black. The Scandinavian-looking lamp was so pure in design, it came to the attention of a man who would change the fortunes of Marshall Studios for years to come. The man was Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., and he was with the Museum of Modern Art. Son of Edgar Kaufmann, Sr., who had commissioned "Fallingwater" from Frank Lloyd Wright, the younger Kaufmann was planning the 1953 Good Design Exhibition at MoMA. After seeing the No. 101, he made a telephone call to Veedersburg". This signed Martz lamp comes in a glossy green glaze with a darkened swirl pattern that runs from top to bottom, circling the perimeter of the lamp. This lamp is a big, but not gigantic – best on an end table in the living room, or other area with lots of open space. Martz / Marshall Studios 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg, Indiana to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware. The Martz's work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene.
