💡 What is it? — Another gem from the masters of mid century lightning – Gordon and Jane Martz. This substantial set of Martz lamps is comprised of a walnut base inlayed with white/gray thin, rectangular ceramic tiles. The pattern appears in three locations surrounding the lamp. The exact shades you see in the photos are not included with this listing. Mostly because there is only actually one, and what you're seeing is a well-executed photoshop job. We'll work out the details. 📗 Martz / Marshall Studios 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware. The Martz's work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene. 🔍 Condition — The lamps are in overall great condition. They have received some light refinishing to refresh the appearance of the wood.
