After the heyday of custom furniture decoration and architecture of the wealthy first half of the 20th century, all this disappeared fast after World War II.
"Cookie cutter" clone homes made their appearance and suburbia was born. Clothing was no longer tailored but purchased off a rack, Bespoke was no longer a common trait of furniture or purchased wares.
Prices were inflated and the upper middle class now had to live in more modest settings, with little to distinguish them from the lower economic tiers. Mass production created a new lifestyle, where people dressed similar, used nearly identical mass produced wares and lived in mass produced homes.
Marbro Lamp Company, founded just before the outbreak of WWII, whose primary customers were at the top of the economic ladder, were now dwindling in number, but still wanted to live with the quality of life they had before the homogenization of modern living.
So Marbro initiated their "Marbro Original" lamps - one of a kind pieces made in the old bespoke manner for customers who could afford to spend a lot more to get the very best in the world. Marbro spared no expense and had lamps made in shops all over the world, many in Italy to produce unique glass or porcelain bodies. Each original lamp received a number and a unique sticker that identified it. Roughly a little over 10000 original lamps were made until the company was sold in 1987.
This program made MARBRO a legendary name in lighting. Royalty, celebrities and the who's who of the world sought out lamps that no one else could ever own. It was a genius marketing move and probably added several decades to the company's survival in an ever competitive lighting marketplace.
The Superb and Splendid lamp is the finest porcelain gilded by the purest gold. It is done in an Empire revival style and has a simple elegance, stark contrasts and commands attention subtly, without noise but by its sterling quality and elegant design.
The color is nearly indescribable and unique! A blue so dark it is almost black. Different viewers report seeing purple, black or dark blue when they look at it. The eye is curious and keeps looking
Lamp is in great vintage condition. The lightest of wear is present, all appropriate for the vintage. Displays marvelously.
Decorators love this type of piece because they can promise their client absolute exclusivity - a treasure no one else can ever have.

The Marbro Lamp Company
The Marbro Lamp Company was one of the finest lamp producers during the mid-1900s. Its pieces were mainly sold in a handful of exclusive furniture shops. Marbro was the go-to supplier of Hollywood Regency and mid-century modern style lighting for interior designers. Its table lamps, chandeliers, floor lamps and wall sconces have graced the homes of many celebrities.
Brothers Morris and Elliott Markoff founded the Marbro Lamp Company in 1934. Its name is a combination of “Markoff” and “brothers.” The brothers relocated from Chicago to southern California after the end of World War II and set up an assembly plant in the garment district of Los Angeles.
Vases and objets d’art, sourced from all over the world, were used as lamp bases. The brass bases came from India, alabaster from Italy, porcelain from Japan and China and crystal from Germany and France. Murano glass and whimsical bronze figurines were two of the more popular base materials.
Marbro lamps were one-of-a-kind and took between 75 and 90 days to complete. Occasionally, they were made from sculptures that customers brought into the factory. Highly skilled woodturners and shade-makers crafted lampshades and wooden bases in Marbro’s shop. Some metal and glass pieces went through paint or staining treatments. The company’s best-known products were these table lamps, but it also produced a wide variety of decorative objects.
The Masco Corporation acquired the Marbro Lamp Company in 1987. Its Los Angeles assembly plant shuttered its doors in 1990. Its equipment and remaining inventory were moved to LaBarge Mirrors — a Masco subsidiary — in Michigan. Shortly after, the production of Marbro lamps ended.
