About the Item

What is it? — This Gordon and Jane Martz lamp features a white glaze with a subtle gray cast, giving it a soft, nuanced appearance. The glaze has a gentle sheen, adding a touch of understated elegance that enhances the depth and texture of the ceramic form. Incised vertical stripes run top to bottom around the perimeter, exposing the clay body beneath and complementing the glaze's understated elegance. The ceramic base is capped with a rounded-edge walnut disc at the top and a thicker, more substantial walnut base below. A tall, sturdy walnut neck elevates the light burlap shade high above the base, with the entire ensemble finished off by the iconic Martz finial. The lamp has all-new hardware, including the cord, harp, and socket. This is a beautiful piece that works wonderfully on a dresser, nightstand, end table, or desk. History — This lamp was part of a collection of lamp bases purchased from a collector local to Veedersburg, Indiana—the former location of the Marshall Studios factory. The collector had amassed a vast collection of Marshall Studios artifacts over the years, including lamps, vases, and other stoneware pieces, many of which had been left incomplete or unused. As the collector began selling off their collection, I acquired this ceramic lamp base, which was missing its original wooden components. To restore it, I commissioned a woodworker to craft new walnut pieces, faithfully replicating the forms that would have originally accompanied this lamp. While this particular ceramic form was sold in various configurations (as a single ceramic piece, two ceramic pieces, or even a stack of three), the newly crafted wooden components are based on how the lamp was configured when sold with just a single ceramic form. Through careful restoration, I’ve brought this lamp back to life, respecting the original design and craftsmanship, and made it available for sale once again. Although much of this lamp has been rebuilt, I assure you it was done with the utmost respect for how these pieces would have originally been produced and sold. Condition — The ceramic form is in excellent vintage condition and was never previously used. See the "History" section above for details on the restoration. All components beyond the ceramic form are newly produced. Returning to Veedersburg to work in the family business, they brought with them a passion for contemporary, hand-designed stoneware. The Martz’s work revolutionized Marshall Studios. What began as a lampshade manufacturing company became a hub of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later hand-decorated using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, numerous private collections, and are highly sought after in the French modernist auction scene.
