Midcentury Table Lamp in Black Glass and Fabric Lampshade by Stilnovo, 1950s

About the Item

Midcentury table lamp with structure in black glass and brass and lampshade in fabric. Produced by the Italian company Stilnovo during the 1950s. The manufacturer's logo is stamped on the light switch. For this lamp it can be used an E27 lightbulb. Dimensions: Height with shade 75 cm Shade max diameter 35 cm Base diameter 16 cm Stilnovo was an important lighting company founded by Bruno Gatta in 1946. Stilnovo is a significant part of the first wave of post-World War Italian design companies specializing in the production of innovative, functional lighting. At its most productive between 1950 and the late 80s, Stilnovo worked with a number of Italy’s leading designers after Bruno Gatta, Danilo and Corrado Aroldi, Gaetano Sciolari, Alberto Fraser, Joe Colombo and Ettore Sottsass. Coming at a time when the IDEA of function was combined with new types of materials to produce pared and texturally novel forms, it was an era of experimentation, where the neo-realism movement tussled with the philosophy of organicism, and where architects borrowed from, subverted and discarded the artisan based Craft-art that had for centuries been Italy’s dominant creative force. Often compared favorably with Arteluce, which, under the guidance of Gino Sarfatti, explored abstract, lineal forms, Stilnovo is known for its well-executed organic lines. The Aroldi designed 1967 Periscope desk lamp is a case in point. Exhibited at New York’s New Domestic Landscape 1968, its snake-like lines are tempered by its enamel finish, creating an effect that is both restrained and alive.

    Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Table lamp or desk lamp model 546 with lampshade in lacquered aluminum, stem in chromed brass, base in lacquered cast-iron, and opaline glass diffuser. This lamp was designed by Gio Ponti and manufactured by Ugo Pollice Illuminazione during the 1940s. Gio Ponti was an icon of the modernist movement: the Italian designer, architect, artist and publisher contributed significantly to the worlds of architecture and design with his extensive work in Fine furniture and ceramics, education, office and residential buildings, and everything in between. Gio Ponti was born in 1891 in Milan. It was there that he spent his childhood, and in 1921 he began to study architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. From 1923 to 1930 he served as the artistic director of the Richard-Ginori porcelain factory. In 1927, Ponti started his first architectural office, together with Emilio Lancia, and in 1928 he started the magazine Domus, which is still regarded as one of the most influential European magazines for architecture and design. He was also very influential during the period as a curator of the Milan Triennale. After his collaboration with Emilio Lancia had come to an end, upon completion of the Torre Rasini, he began to work as an architect together with the engineers Antonio Fornaroli and Eugenio Soncini...
