About the Item
Monumental or oversize ceramic table lamp by the highly-regarded English artist potter Alan Wallwork (1931 - 2019). Signed and dated to underside AW 64.
A wonderful statement piece, in good vintage condition. There is similar decoration on both sides, and the upper part is finished in a deep grey/blue.
There is light age-appropriate wear and occasional flaws in line with the hand-making and firing process, as one might expect, such as light scuffs, firing cracks and glaze losses or crazing. The lamp has its original wiring which we advise is tested/replaced prior to use in the country of install. Very unusual to see these larger pieces, from the London years, particularly with a date.
Wiring:
Wiring is original, with a switched bulb-holder taking a standard bayonet-fitting bulb. We advise the wiring is tested/replaced as necessary in the country of install. We always advise low-heat bulbs to protect vintage lighting for the future.
Shade:
The hessian lampshade is not included.

Wallwork set up his first studio in south London, in the late 1950s, sharing with other former Goldsmith students, then with fellow potter Bernard Rooke. Both Wallwork and Rooke were regarded as belonging to the group of handbuilders of the 1960s, which included Ruth Duckworth, Gillian Lowndes, Ian Auld and Gordon Baldwin. A number of pieces by Wallwork are kept by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
