Monumental Tony Paul for Westwood Futures Asian Buddha Sculptural Table Lamp MCM

About the Item

SUMPTUOUS! TONY PAUL FOR WESTWOOD FUTURES MID CENTURY MARVELOUS! ONLY SOLD TO DECORATORS! DIMENSIONS: APPROX. 32" TALL BY 18" WIDE Westwood lamps were some of the Mid Century's most "tony" offerings. Not surprisingly, the finest were designed by Tony Paul. As in all industries, sometimes the best is not good enough. Like a bespoke Rolls Royce or a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, Westwood created a line for exclusive clients. This line was called "Westwood Futures" and was the "designer only" cousin of the normal "Westwood Industries" offerings. This line was available only to licensed interior decorators and carried a hefty increase in both price and status. Homes decorated by Laszlo, Pahlmann, Grossman and others would be able to acquire these lamps and they would be picked up at their warehouse/showroom. For their first big "Futures" line they chose the theme of ancient Asia. Lamps which featured authentic Buddha sculptures from thousands of years ago and other Chinese decorative motifs were featured! This lamp is the premiere lamp from that line up, a tall, standing Buddha sculptured and enameled in gold, giving a silent blessing of enlightenment to the interior in which he resides! So few of these were made and only for custom decorator jobs-often celebrities, tycoons and captains of industry. Very Fine vintage Condition! Displays superbly! A wonderful WESTWOOD FUTURES lamp that will look great in your Manhattan penthouse, West Palm Beach estate or Palm Springs atomic ranch home!

  • Monumental South Pacific Bamboo Table Lamp Tiki Gabriella Crespi McGuire
    By McGuire, Gabriella Crespi
    Located in Peoria, AZ
MONUMENTAL BAMBOO & WALNUT POLYNESIAN STYLE TABLE LAMP In the Manner of McGuire & Gabriella Crespi Circa 1950 At the very beginning of the Post-War Polynesian or South Pacific craze which took over America during the forties and fifties, there were precious few importers of fine bamboo furnishings. John & Elinore McGuire set up shop in California to do just that and their works are legendary for quality and durabiity. The time required to cut, soak, bend and shape bamboo into permanently sculpted forms was substantial and the exotic material was only available in quantity in the South Pacific. This lamp is an extremely rare, early example of a Bamboo lamp done in Polynesian (later Tiki) style. You seldom see any of these lamps, because they were very scarce new and even fewer have survived the past 70 years since their manufacture. It was likely created & imported in very small numbers around 1950 and sold through an early importer such as McGuire. Many bamboo importers were direct-to-decorator importers who advertised in Interiors or House & Garden magazine. The shape is based on the style of bamboo work used to create thatched huts and housing in the South Pacific islands - bamboo, cut, soaked and shaped and then tied with cane binding. This one has a double stacked oversized walnut base to provided stability to this enormous lamp...
