About the Item

A sensational and high quality pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu, patinated Bronze and Rouge Griotte marble candelabra lamps, signed H. Picard. Each stunning electrified candelabra is raised on an Ormolu plinth with a protruding front and recessed foliate plaques on all sides below the beautifully carved Rouge Griotte marble pedestals with charming beaded bands. Above are spiral fluted socle pedestals accented with foliate bands below the patinated Bronze bodies showcasing intricately detailed palmettes at the base and spiral fluted designs at the mid section. Square handles flank the bodies and are connected by a tapered and mottled top cap which supports the central fut. The stunning candelabras above display scrolled arms with similar spiral fluted designs as the body and are accented with Ormolu rosettes. Each arm is finished with a foliate bobeche below a reeded candle cup displaying a laurel band. The arms are connected at the top of the central fut by a foliate reserve that holds the sixth central arm. Henri Picard, founder and gilder, worked in Paris from 1831 to 1884, notably for the Emperor Napoleon III. He is listed as bronze maker and gilder in the National Archives because of his participation to the jointure of the Tuilerie and the Louvre Museum from 1853 to 1865. The “Musée du Louvre” has a pair of twelve gilt-bronze lights candelabras by Picard. Henri Picard, Freres Company was founded in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland in 1857 and is still in business today.
