A Bit of History: Franklin Mint is a well-known company, especially for its limited edition collectible items. Founded in 1964, Franklin Mint gained great popularity by creating and selling high-quality replicas, commemorative coins, figurines, and other art and collectible items. Many of these items were produced in limited runs and were often associated with historical, cultural, or artistic themes. The items produced by Franklin Mint were often of high quality and held strong perceived value in the collector’s market. Nicholas L. Berbenczy (December 6, 1920 – January 3, 2011): Berbenczy was born in Budapest, Hungary, on December 6, 1920. By the age of eight, he had learned the art of painting porcelain. As a young man, he studied with some of the best hand-painting ceramic artists in the world. Before leaving Hungary, he was a master painter at Herend Porcelain. Over the years, he worked in Hungary, Brazil, Austria, and the United States, meeting renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Marc Chagall. In 1967, Berbenczy was commissioned by the Lyndon Johnson administration, through the Shenango China Company, to design plates for the White House. He hand-painted more than 200 dessert plates used in the White House’s official porcelain service and also created a King Tut plate with a gold border. After working with Shenango China, Berbenczy freelanced for Franklin Mint in Philadelphia until his retirement in 1990. Upon returning to New Castle, he continued painting and sculpting until his passing. Don’t miss out on this rare item! We are specializing in premium antiques.
