Set of Two Rooke Studio Ceramic TOTEM Lamps Natural Tones, England, 1960s

$7,017.85per set

About

A set of two heavy ceramic TOTEM lamps by Bernard Rooke, England, 1960s. Sculptural statement pieces, made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone. The two are of the same broad design but each lamp is unique, due to the hand-making process. The two-disc elements are decorated on each side with a small blue panel, and other elements feature simple markings and decoration. The pieces are in good original condition, with signs of wear as one might expect from age and use, and occasional flaws in line with the hand-making and firing process. For us, the weight and texture of the elements suggest these are early pieces. In images 1-3 we are showing the lamps with very simple natural hessian shades, recently handmade using appropriate midcentury proportions, which can be included free of charge if required, and more images are available. Images 4 to 11 show details of the lamp on the right. Wiring: New wiring will be required to suit your local needs and regulations. The lamps are very slightly different in height, and the points where the lamp-holders attach are unique to each piece. The piece on the left in the main image has the central threaded tube showing above the ceramic; the piece on the right has the tube ending in a small well (see images 12 & 13). The threaded tube is 1/2" diameter in both cases. We advise the use of low heat bulbs. Dimensions (ceramic only): (i) Lamp on left: H 76cm x W 15.5cm at base x D 14.5cm at base; (ii) Lamp on right: H 75cm x W 16cm at base x D 14.5cm at base. Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-made using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
