Sormani Nucleo Travertine Table Lamps by G. Cesari, 1970s, Italy – Set of 2

About the Item

This pair of vintage travertine table lamps represents the very first original prototypes designed by Giuliano Cesari for Sormani in the early 1970s. They were created as part of the company's Nucleo Division, an experimental design initiative developed to complement Sormani’s modernist furniture with avant-garde accessories and lighting. These early prototypes mark a pioneering moment in Italian lighting design, showcasing the innovative use of travertine, a natural stone deeply rooted in Italian architectural heritage. They reflect Sormani’s bold exploration of materials, blending stone, chrome, steel, Perspex, marble, aluminum extrusions, and plastics to push the boundaries of form and function. The two lamps can be displayed side by side or stacked in alternate configurations to achieve a sculptural, architectural presence. Their distinctive form and authentic materials make them highly collectible pieces within the canon of Mid-Century Modern Italian lighting. Condition: Fully functional. The travertine stone shows some natural patina and minor chips at the lower edge, consistent with age and material. The chromed back plates are in excellent, original condition. Bulbs: Each lamp is fitted with mirrored bulbs (included). Dimensions (each lamp): Height: 35 cm (13.78 in) Width: 25 cm (9.84 in) Depth: 12 cm (4.72 in) This set comes with an original Certificate of Authenticity issued on Sormani letterhead. These prototype travertine lamps are not only rare but historically significant—a bold statement of Italian design experimentation in the 1970s. Perfect for collectors, curators, or interiors that demand iconic, sculptural lighting.
