Table lamp Bumling by Anders Pehrson for Ateljé Lyktan, Sweden

About the Item

Table lamp Bumling designed in 1968 by Anders Pehrson for Ateljé Lyktan. White metal shade standing on a trumpet shaped foot. Complete with white plastic defuser. While many Swedes recognize this iconic chubby lamp, its history is far from straightforward. The manufacturer Ateljé Lyktan was founded by Hans & Verna Bergström in 1934. About twenty years later, Hans decided to design a small lantern. Inspired by the metal canopies of his own lamps, Bergström designed a metal candleholder with a tulip-shaped glass shade, known as the 100L “Ofir”. However, the Bergströms were forced to leave Ateljé Lyktan in the late 1950s due to financial difficulties, and the company was sold for less than a dollar to the engineer Anders Pehrson. Over the years, he modernized the factory and adapted products to the aesthetics of the 1960s and 1970s. Pehrson, intrigued by the small candleholder, transformed its metal base into the now-famous chubby pendant lamp. The first Bumling, (“the Boulder”), was unveiled at the Gothenburg lighting fair in 1968 to widespread acclaim.
