Vintage Greige Pietra Decor Series Terracotta Lamp by Bitossi, Circa 1950

About the Item

Vintage Bulbous Greige Pietra Decor Series Textured Terracotta Lamp by Bitossi for Raymor, Circa 1950s. Bulbous bottle formed from textured terracotta mounted on a patinated steel cylindrical base. The horizontal striations were created on the wheel before the piece was bisque-fired, adding depth to the body. Utilizing this technique created unique patterns, making no two pieces alike. Finished with a matte greige glaze. In the manner of works designed by Urbano Zaccagnini for Raymor. Original “Raymor” manufacturing label intact on socket. Confirmed by the Bitossi Archive as part of their Pietra Decor Series. Additional production label can found on the base of the ceramic body (only visible when the lamp is taken apart) noting style number “1201” as well as place of production “Made in Italy.” **SOLD WITHOUT LAMPSHADE. • Vintage Large Scale Ceramic Kifwebe-Inspired Mask Lamp on Mahogany Base, 1950s
    By Yasha Heifetz
Located in Long Island City, NY
Vintage Large Scale Ceramic Kifwebe-Inspired Mask Lamp on Mahogany Base, Circa 1950s. A gorgeous interpretation of a Congolese Kifwebe mask rendered in off-white stoneware with incised surface detailing in shades of tan and brown. Mounted on a solid mahogany base. We believe this piece to have inspired by an actual carved wood Kifwebe mask in the collection of the MET. Possibly produced by Heifetz, but likely a one-of-a-kind off piece. SOLD WITHOUT LAMPSHADE. “The striations on both male and female masks, which are a unique stylistic trait of all Songye masks, are derived from the markings and patterns of wild and dangerous animals, such as the zebra or striped antelope, crocodile, lion, porcupine, and snake. Bifwebe (Male masks) may be painted black, white, and red. The colors of black and white, however, refer to gender. Female masks are predominantly white, if they are painted at all.” - Dallas Museum of Art “Kifwebe masks played a central role in Songye society enacting control over the social order, and participating in crucial activities such as initiations. This face mask only formed part of a costume ensemble that also included a hood, shirt, and pants made of woven bark, completed by diverse implements in animal skins, furs, and feathers. Like most masks in Western collections, this example was separated from the rest of the costume following its collection from Africa. Once removed from its original context, it no longer formed part of a kinetic and multisensory environment but was admired as a static object of strong graphic qualities, particularly its contrasting white and black striations, stylized features, and overall sense of balance.” - Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Condition: Excellent vintage condition. One tiny chip on the forehead ridge (barely noticeable and as detailed in photos...
