Backström studied at the Art College and HKS 1959-1964, where she among other things designed a coffee tableware in silver. She won a competition organized for the 100th anniversary of Boda Glassworks , which became the start of her work as a glass designer at Boda Glassworks in 1965 . She has participated in collections exhibitions at the Röhsska Museum and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and she has had exhibitions in the USA, Japan, Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Her experimental passion was great and she created a number of different clothing collections where some parts were reused within glass art. When Cost Glassworksshe turned 250 in 1992 she created her magnificent jars , and at the Kalmar Union's 600th anniversary in 1997 she designed a magnificent plinth which was then handed over by King Carl Gustaf to King Harald of Norway. In addition to glass, she has designed jewelry in her own direction since April 2006 and painted paintings. She is the daughter of director Sten Hultberg and textile designer Astrid Sampe and was married to architect Adam Backström from 1961 to 1965. From 1968 to 1972 she was cohabiting with the artist Erik Höglund with whom she got her daughter Erika Höglund (born 1971), also an artist.
