Chinese Blue and White Fu Lion Headrest
Located in Chicago, IL
This small ceramic block is actually a form of Chinese headrest or neck pillow. Popular during the Qing dynasty, rigid headrests such as this were used by upper-class women to protect their elaborate hairstyles by elevating the head during slumber. This example dates to the mid-20th century and is glazed in the blue-and-white style with dark, cobalt-blue color. Each side of the headrest has a quadrilobe cartouche framing two mythical fu lions playing with a brocade ball, a motif that evokes the idiom "may you and your descendant achieve high rank." A powerful and benevolent guardian, the fu lion (shizi) is the perfect force to protect against nightmares and bad energy. The playful scene is surrounded by a cracked ice pattern dotted with plum blossoms, symbols of winter and longevity. A geometric meander trims the corners and small bats frame coin...

Albisola Ceramic Jug, Hand Painted, ALBA DOCILIA Manufacture, Italy, Early 20thC
Located in Torino, IT
Albisola ceramic jug, hand painted. ALBA DOCILIA manufacture. Italy, early twentieth century Origin Italy Period Early twentieth century Brand ALBA DOCILIA In 1919 the Albanian Adolfo Rossello, in partnership with a group of financiers, Eng. Guglielmo Camogli, the honorable Michelino Poggi, the lawyer Costantino Barile and Andrea Seitun, returns to his hometown and opens an artisan ceramic factory called 'Alba Docilia', the ancient Roman name of Albisola. In 1922 the 'Alba Docilia', directed at the time by the Roman painter Mario Gambetta, won a medal at the Diano Marina Exhibition and since 1923 has regularly participated in the Milan Trade Fair. In 1923 the factory was transformed into a cooperative company and the following year Adolfo Rossello and his children Angela Teresa, Vittorina, Francesco Adolfo and Pietro became the sole owners. In 1925 the factory took part in the 2nd Monza Biennale. In 1928 the company is present at the Artisan Exhibition of Savona and participates in the Exhibition of Artisan Products of the Albisolese Week of 1933 and '34. Also in 1934, the manufacture's production was presented at the exhibitions in Tripoli, Leipzig and Vienna. In 1938 he was present at the Ligurian Ceramics Exhibition in Rome and at the Florence Handicraft Fair, which he also participated in in 1956 and 1958. Among the ceramists who collaborated with the company between the first and second post-war periods, among others appear: Virio da Savona, Guglielmo Bozzano, Romeo Bevilacqua, Cerruti, Carlo Frumento, Benedetto Gaggero, Ida Milani, Amleto Modolo and Ivos Pacetti...

Sven Wejesfelt, Large Blue and Red Stoneware Bowl , Gustavsberg, Sweden 1991
Located in Tokyo, 13
Sven Wejesfelt, Large bowl with a glossy glaze of mixed blue and red, Gustavsberg , Sweden 1991 Impressed "Swen" "G (hand) " UNIK 91. This is a large size bowl piece by Sven Wejesfelt, an artist who worked at the Gustavsberg Pottery in Sweden. Wejesfelt worked as a wheelwright at Rorstrand from 1946-53 before moving to Gustavsberg in 1953. He worked as a wheelwright for Stig Lindberg for a long time, and in 1974 he became the Art Director of Gustavsberg. He is a rare Scandinavian artist who throws, glazes, and fires all of his own work, and is famous in Sweden as the second most famous potter after Berndt Friberg. He continued to make pottery until his death in 2009, and in his final years he sold his glazes and recipes. This large bowl is entirely covered with a bright red cinnabar glaze, which is then covered with a double layer of bright blue glaze, blending with each other. The bright blue glaze is covered with a fine white furrow that gives it a vivid and lively appearance, as if oil paints had just been applied to it. The cinnabar glaze appears on the bottom and around the base, and the red of the prospective vase is particularly vivid. The contrast between the blue and red is so strong that it takes your breath away when you look into the vase. The glaze is slightly viscous, and when you touch it with your finger, it is raised, giving an uneven surface. This piece was exhibited in the exhibition "Modernism and Mingei: Nordic Ceramics...
