Edward Wormley Dunbar Oasis Sofas in Ivory Boucle Early First Generation 1930s
Located in Dallas, TX
The price listed is per sofa. This is a rare first edition Oasis Sofa designed by Edward Wormley and created in the 1930s when he first began his tenure at the Dunbar furniture company of Berne Indiana. The Oasis sofa is not only a historically significant piece of twentieth-century design history, but it is also undeniably elegant and most importantly, extremely comfortable. This is an heirloom quality hand-built sofa crafted with a solid hardwood frame that has been professionally restored to the highest possible standard. The complete restoration included all new foam, reinforcing the frame, re-working the eight-way hand-tied springs, upholstering with new high-performance Italian boucle material, and refinishing the solid mahogany legs. These sofas are almost 100 years old and are now ready for another 100 years of enjoyment. This era of design was significant for Wormley because it marked his style as a more formal brand of modernism, re-imagining classic forms while removing the unnecessary carvings and embellishments to give them a more modern, 20th-century appeal. As rare as these sofas are we were miraculously able to source a matching pair. They have both been restored to the same specifications and are a perfect mirrored pair. The price listed is for EACH sofa, but, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a pair of one of the most prestigious classic modern designer sofas...

Pair of Gainsborough Library Chairs in the Irish Georgian Style
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING A GORGEOUS and INTRIGUING Pair of Gainsborough Library Chairs in the Irish Georgian Style. Made of walnut, probably in the 1980’s and probably made and upholstered in the US ….. for the ‘amusing and ironic’ reasons, we will ‘delve’ into later in this posting! This pair of beautiful re-production chairs, were styled upon “Gainsborough’ Library Armchairs, from the Georgian Era of British & Irish furniture. This pair were specifically styled on the ‘Irish’ Georgian Style, with the ‘hairy paw’ feet and the ‘Celtic Knot” motif on the armrests. Both motif’s being, ‘synonymous’, with Irish Georgian furniture in the mid to late 18th Century! Both are upholstered in an antique style, ‘Coat of Arms...

19C French Gothic Revival Bench or Stool
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING A LOVELY 19C French Gothic Revival Bench/Stool or Organ Stool/Bench seat. Made in rural/provincial France (possibly Brittany) circa 1860-80 and in the Gothic Revival Style. We are of the opinion that the wood is ‘chestnut’ and not ‘oak’, as one would expect. The use of ‘chestnut’ makes this even RARER! Very ‘ecclesiastical’ in design and possibly would have been made for a Church, as the organ player’s stool/bench seat. Oblong/rectangular in shape. Unmistakably French, due to the base cross support design and construction, with circular central medallion (very ‘Breton’ in design) and wooden peg inserts for securing the base cross support on the outside of each side. This bench/stool is ‘nicer’ than most that have appeared on the market, due to it’s very good condition and the beautifully hand-carved decoration, beveled edges and raised arches on both sides. Also, the pair of carved gothic window-esque friezes on both sides, are a lovely touch! We are confident that this is a 19th Century piece, due to its natural aging, patina and when being re-upholstered it still had it’s original straw and horse (?) hair filling for the seat cushion. This Bench is part of an EXCEPTIONAL Private Dallas Collection. This Bench has IMPECCABLE PROVENANCE: It was purchased by an ancestor of the family (together with several other items also in the Collection), at a French Antique Auction held at the Club Room in the Stoneleigh Court (Hotel), Dallas on Wednesday the 2nd April 1930. (Now The Meridian Hotel). We have the Original Auction Catalog, which has remained with the Collection, since that Auction. (see photos). The Auction was titled: ” Works of Art and Furnishings of The Chateau de Turique (Nancy) and The Conde-Rougemont Home (Touraine). The cover of the Catalog also has a ‘seal’ of a Coat of Arms. The first page of the Catalog States: “Exhibition on Wednesday, April 2nd And Following Days From 10 A.M. to 10 P.M……EXHIBITION at CLUB ROOM, STONELIGH COURT, DALLAS, TEXAS”. The Second page gives a brief description of the Auction contents and states that ” This Exhibition will be presented by M. Fernand M. Adda of Paris France” This bench, we believe, was Lot No: 297 and was described in the Auction Catalog as: 297 – CARVED GOTHIC BENCH...

L & JG Stickley Single Door Oak Bookcase
Located in Dallas, TX
L & LG Stickley Oak Bookcase. Circa 1910 A single 16 pane glass window door bookcase with mortise and tenon oak wood construction is wonderful condition with a beautiful finish ready to complete your arts and crafts Gustave Stickley collection. Dimensions: 54-3/4 x 34-1/4 x 12 inches (139 x 87 x 30.5 cm) (each) Provenance: Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk Condition: Very good condition with tasteful handmade quality of the Arts and Crafts movement. Minor nicks and losses to edges throughout. Minor splits. Paint on interior not original to bookcase tastefully done.. No chips or cracks to glass pane. Founded in 1900 by Leopold and John George Stickley, L. and J.G. Stickley, Inc. is a manufacturer and marketer of premium solid wood furniture. Privately owned by the Audi family since 1974, the company now operates a facility greater than 400,000 square feet in Manlius, New York, an upholstery plant in North Carolina, and six retail showrooms in New York and Connecticut. Stickley, then 41, returned home to Eastwood, New York, where he set up his Craftsman Shops in 1898 and began to experiment with his own distinctive designs. He favored clean lines and emphasized the inherent beauty of natural wood and leather. Like Morris, he sought inspiration in the styles of the medieval period. He worked in natural white oak because of its strength and "honesty." Rejecting ornamentation and valuing craftsmanship, he based his designs on rectilinear forms; construction features, such as mortise and tenon and dovetail joints, doubled as decoration. He labeled his original pieces with his name and shopmark, which depicted a small joiner's compass inset with the slogan "Als ik kan," or "To the best of my ability," in Flemish. Stickley's furniture--called Mission Oak because of the early 1900s popularity of California mission architecture and because it somewhat resembled the furniture used in the missions--soon found enthusiastic support. So, too, did Stickley's philosophy, which others embraced as visionary and reformist. Soon manufacturers across the country were creating their own versions of "mission" furniture. These included Stickley's own younger brothers: Leopold and John George, who incorporated in Fayetteville, New York, in 1904, and, in 1905, introduced their first furniture line alongside Gustav's Mission Oak at a Grand Rapids trade show; Albert Stickley, who made furniture under the label Stickley Brothers Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Charles Stickley, who shared ownership of Stickley and Brandt Chair Co. in Binghamton, New York. All of the Stickleys were accomplished craftsmen, who, like their older brother, were not opposed to machines; they simply used machinery to get the manufacturing process to the point where the hand could efficiently take over and complete the joinery. It was not industrialization per se that they rejected, but the sloppy work practices encouraged by mass production. In fact, Leopold and John George Stickley introduced some cutting edge designs and innovative construction techniques of their own with their Handcraft line. However, only Gustav Stickley attempted to market a lifestyle. Like his European counterparts, Gustav Stickley published on the subject of his philosophy of simplicity. He introduced his own magazine, The Craftsman, whose masthead announced its purpose as being "in the interest of better art, better work, and a better, more reasonable way of living," and filled it with treatises and illustrations of his furniture and interior design--every aspect of the designed environment, from tiles and pottery to gardens and landscape. He also developed and sold model house plans...
