About the Item

A Large Magnifying Glass with a Carved Bone Sculpture Belonging to the Sassoon Family in the Late 19th Century. The Sassoon family, known as "Rothschilds of the East" due to the immense wealth they accumulated in finance and the opium trade, are a Baghdadi Jewish family. The family's businesses in China, India, and Hong Kong especially, were built to capitalize on the opium business. As more family members gravitated toward London, they became prominent in England and were ennobled by Queen Victoria. This Magnifying and applied bone sculpture was one of the items that belonged to the Sassoon family in the late 1900s as evident from the family crest which adorns the front of the sculpture. The applied sculpture has the face of a Sassoon family member wearing a cloak over his shoulders atop the crest of the Sassoon family at the front tapering handle. At the bottom of the handle, the sculpture is applied to a silver band with beaded patterns and undulating scrolling. A large circular magnifying glass with a thick holder is attached to the handle.
