Italian White Lacquer and Giltwood Floor Mirror, Florence, circa 1865

About the Item

This gorgeous Florentine 19th century palatial rectangular white lacquered and giltwood full length mirror belongs to the period called “Firenze Capitale” (1865-1871). The white lacquer highlight the splendor of gold leaves details and the great shape of this one-of-a-kind floor mirror. The lacquered mirror’s frame is decorated with a masterfully deeply hand-carved giltwood details throughout. The rich and numerous ornaments feature both anthropomorphic figures and motifs inspired by nature. The top of the mirror is embellished with a big stylized leaf surrounded by scrolls, leaves and fruits. Floral and foliate motifs are repeated throughout the frame and one can discover many other interesting hand-carved patterns such as grotesques, masks and shields. A very chic and eye-catching antique mirror, perfect to decorate any room with high ceilings or to put on a staircase Florence was Capital city of Italy from 1865-1871 and in that period the city has seen many changes due to this new important institutional role. The capital’s government offices found their headquarters in the great palazzi of the antique town centre, this mirror come from one of these mansion. Provenance: The mirror comes from the Florentine apartment of a private collector. This beautiful work of art has belonged to his family for generations. During the Second World War it was part of the furnishings of a hotel owned by his family. The structure has been bombed and this mirror is among the few objects that have miraculously saved.
