Antique French Silver Leaf Gilded Louis Philippe Mirror with an Ornate Crest

About

This beautiful mirror is partially silver leaf gilded and shows the bone color of the gesso. The frame has the upper rounded corners typical for the Louis Philippe style. It features rich ornaments around the frame, such as bay leaf, scallops, acanthus, and flowers. The frame has a pearl beading surrounding the outer edge. This mirror was made in northern France, in the Alsace Lorraine region in circa 1880. This mirror was originally a “gold” mirror. Its golden appearance was made by the use of gold paint (gold dust mixed with clear varnish) and silver leaf gilding with a yellow patina over it. The use of yellow patine made the silver look gold. The yellow patina has been washed off to reveal the silver and bone colors that combine beautifully. The pureness of the materials and the patina that remains make this a truly rare piece. The mirror plate is mercury silvered and is original to the frame as well as the pine back cladding. Condition details: The mirror was cleaned in our atelier, both from the inside and outside. Over a hundred years of dust was removed. The upper crest has minor damages that were repaired. The glass has the typical mist and some marks, but matches perfectly with the frame and shows no awkward spots. The glass was reinserted and the back cladding reattached.
