About the Item

A very fine and impressive English Rococo 19th century Chinese Chippendale style figural gilt-wood carved over mantel or pier mirror in the manner of Thomas Johnson, after his collection of designs, 1758. The sectional divided ornately carved giltwood frame crowned with a chinioserie figure of a seated man flanked by a pair of Ho-Ho birds on rocaille and icicles, above a howling fox, hounds, a flying Ho Ho bird and a goat, all within a foliate and C-scroll frame carved with turrets and rockwork, circa 1850-1880. Measures: Height 81 1/4 inches (206 cm), width 67 inches (170 cm), depth 7 1/2 inches (19.1 cm). English Rococo tended to be more restrained, for example Chippendale's designs for ribbon backed chairs. The most successful exponent of English Rococo was probably Thomas Johnson a gifted carver and furniture designer working in London in the mid-1700s. A similar design by Thomas Johnson is illustrated on Johnson, Thos. (Thomas), circa 1714-1778. 150 new designs (1761) Part 1st, pp. Plate 1-Plate 14 ff.
