Fine 19th Century Chippendale Style Gilt Wood Carved Mirror after Thomas Johnson

A very fine and Impressive English Rococo 19th century Chippendale style Figural gilt wood carved Over mantel or Pier mirror in the manner of Thomas Johnson after his Collection of Designs, 1758. The sectional divided ornately carved gilt wood frame flanked with pair of Ho-Ho birds on rocaille and icicles, above strands of flowers with foliate, scrolls and rockwork, circa 1880. Measures: Height: 86 inches (218.5 cm), width: 48 1/2 inches (121.9 cm), depth: 8 inches (20.3 cm). English Rococo tended to be more restrained, for example Chippendale's designs for ribbon backed chairs. The most successful exponent of English Rococo was probably Thomas Johnson a gifted carver and furniture designer working in London in the mid-1700s. See also chinoiserie.
