About the Item

This astonishing pair of antique French mirrors is made in southern France around 1870. They are well preserved and very much authentic. The glass has a facet edge and is the original plate in both mirrors. The most elevated part of the frame is shaped as natural tree branch. The overall theme of both mirrors is more natural than average. Each frame has a pieced center bow crest with ornate wreath of flowers surrounding it. The center of the crest is flanked by two putti holding the elegant flower garlands. These mirrors have their orignal color and authentic patina. The color is made up by the use of three different gilding techniques. The inner part of the frame, that surrounds the glass is actually silver leaf gilt. A yellow patina was applied to give the silver a golden appearance. The tree branch part of the frame is gilt by the use of cellulose laquer mixed with gold dust. The part of the frame between the silver leaf and tree branch is gold leaf gilt. Gold leaf is also used to highlight certain areas, mostly in the ornaments. The use of different types of gilding was common and gave the creator the means to create contrast and depth. These mirrors are made in the typical way French mirrors were made in that era. The frames are made in pine wood and all ornaments were casted. The material used for casting was a mixture of grinded cow bone and chalk. The ornaments would have a wire mesh to add stability and strength to it. Tiny cracks in the ornaments are common and not a problem due to the wire mesh. All ornaments were casted in molds and the frame was composed out of many different molds. Therefor it was likely to have many differences between mirrors. These mirrors are in perfect condition and very impressive.
