About the Item

18th century, Italian Louis XIV carved giltwood mirror The baroque mirror, made in Italy in the first half of the 18th century, has a rectangular frame in carved and gilded wood. The inner frame that surrounds the mirror is carved with palmette motifs. The background between the internal and external frame is embellished with an application of lacquered paper with a faux marble pattern. On it stand out refined gilded wooden elements carved in relief. Turns and phytomorphic elements are centered at the top by a head in bas-relief crowned by leaves. The mirror is coeval and has the natural oxidation of mercury characteristic of the time. This frame can be placed over a chest of drawers or a console or a fireplace, or in an elegant bathroom above the sink, but also used as a piece of furniture between paintings or between sconces. Its sober and elegant architecture makes it suitable for environments of ancient taste and equally among modern furnishings. Late 18th Century, Italian Neoclassical Carved and Lacquered Wood Chaise Longue Dimensions: W 222 x D 82 x H 105 cm, seat height 50 cm This distinctive and refined chaise longue was crafted in Piedmont during the Neoclassical period, around the late 18th century. Made of carved walnut wood and lacquered in creamy tones, it features a round upholstered backrest, upholstered armrests ending in scrolls and elegantly connected to the seat with a flowing design. The seat is notably deep, allowing one to fully stretch out once seated. At the opposite end, there is a second, lower backrest with a rectangular shape, curved outward and also upholstered. The apron, backrests, and armrests are finely carved with classical geometric motifs. Near the eight legs, there are quadrangular carved elements decorated with floral motifs. The apron between the legs features a central carved bow—an iconic detail of Neoclassical ornamentation. The legs originate from circular capitals and taper in an inverted truncated cone shape. They are fluted and end in hemispherical feet. The term chaise longue, meaning “long chair” in French, traces its origins back to Ancient Egypt, where pharaohs used raised and inclined beds for relaxation. However, the term as we know it developed in 17th-century France, where the piece became a symbol of luxury and power. Early chaise longues were favored by the aristocracy for reclining and socializing in formal rooms. These furnishings combined the functionality of a bed with the elegance of an armchair, making them ideal for showcasing wealth and social status. Today, the chaise longue remains one of the most iconic and versatile furniture pieces, embodying both elegance and comfort. This particular example, highly decorative and elegant, can be placed as a centerpiece in spaces such as entrances, living rooms, studies, or bedrooms.
