Large Giltwood Italian Starburst Mirror
About the Item
This delightful carved and gilt starburst mirror was found in Italy and likely dates from the late 19th century. It features a diminutive center with an exaggerated double ring of rays and the aged patina has marvelous depth from where the red boule clay is visible beneath the gilt surface.
Dimensions: 24 inches dia. overall; mirror center 2.5 inches dia.
Such starbursts were originally created for an ecclesiastic function, and many adorned local parish churches or private prayer rooms. Sunbursts are now a wonderful way to add an element of visual delight and interest to a room, whether over a mantle, bed, or entry table. This particular one, with it's small central mirror and its double row of long, stylized rays would also look incredible mounted to the ceiling, or placed high and off-centered on a large wall.
