About the Item

On offer here is a beautiful gold leaf gilt French mirror that was made in the late 19th century, circa 1880. It has the upper rounded corners typical for the Louis Philippe style. The mirror frame has an elegant pearl beading surrounding the glass. The most elevated part Is engraved with a Classic geometric Greek Key Meander pattern. Meander or meandros is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif. It is also known as the Greek fret or Greek key. The mirror is completely gold leaf gilt. Parts are polished more than others, this gives the gold a different appearance. The more the gold leaf is polished, the more glossy it becomes. Also, it reveals more of the underlying red bole color. The difference in both gloss and color gives the mirror more definition. The mirror has its original silver nitrate silvered mirror plate with many evenly distributed small spots. The authentic pine back cladding was removed as well as the glass plate. Everything was gently cleaned and the glass was firmly reinserted. The mirror is now clean, solid, and ready for use.
