Antique 19th Century French Gold Rococo Wall Mirror with Cherubs or Putti

About the Item

This beautiful abundant ornamented French mirror was made in the late 19th century. Its serpentine shape was made in solid pine smoothened with gesso. The frame is completely decorated with classic French ornaments such as C scrolls, flowers, leaves, and acanthus. Two opposing cherubs or putti holding a floral garland make this mirror unique. The mirror frame is completely gold gilt and shows a rich variety of gold colors with great patina. The mirror was partially gold leaf gilt and partially gilt by the use of gold paint. The gold paint was made to mix the gold powder with clear lacquer. Gold leaf was polished to achieve a deep metallic gloss that has a rich contrast with the more matte gold paint finish. The patina built up over more than 100 years adds character to the piece. The mirror glass is a nitrate silver silvered plate that is authentic to the mirror. The glass shows a few small scratches and a subtle yellow/gold color. The color comes from the paint that was used to protect the silver at the back. The paint has reacted with the silver layer and it shows the brushmarks on the front side. This yellow haze is very subtle and only visible on close examination. The pine back cladding is authentic to the mirror as well. The mirror has undergone minor repairs in our atelier and the mirror was removed from the frame. Over 100 years of gathered dust was cleaned and the glass was firmly reinserted again. The mirror is without damage and in great antique condition with lots of character. A great piece.

Condition:
Repaired: The bottom part of the ornamenst has some cracks that were repaired. Also a few older repairs were retouched . Wear consistent with age and use. The piece is in great authentic condition and is without damage.
