Pair of 18th century Italian mirrors in gilt wood, Louis XV
About the Item
This beautiful pair of gilded mirrors was made in 18th century in Italy.
They have a gilded wooden frame carved with foliate motifs with a rich cymatium at the top. On the upper sides we find the presence of a rare pair of sculpted heads. A contemporary and original mercury glass is applied to the central body which shows the correct blackening of the surface due to the alteration and oxidation of the mercury.
At the base of both we find a hole which was used to insert a candle holder. In fact the gender function of mirrors was also to reflect the light throughout the room.
In perfect condition, they are ready to be hung.
Authenticity:
This pair of mirrors can boast absolute integrity in the gilding and also in the mirror, a quality that is difficult to find on the antiques market. Already exhibited at Modenantiquria and Gotha in Parma, two market exhibitions in which the objects can be exhibited subject to examination by an examining commission.
It is also possible to verify the era by looking at the back.
Materials:
Frames: they are made of "soft" wood (so called because they are softer and therefore easier to work with) covered in pure gold leaf. Not to be confused with the one "in Mecca", invented by the Neapolitans around the 17th century and composed of silver "dyed" with pigments from China. And from the "imitation" one, invented starting from the 19th century and composed of an alloy of copper, brass and zinc.
Mirrors: mercury glass (in use at the time)
Dimensions:
height: 120cm; 47 inches
w: 70cm; 27.55 inches
