About the Item

An extraordinary example of an English Chippendale looking glass. The rectangular plate with conforming foliate surround and frame lie beneath a molded swan's neck pediment that features two carved phoenix facing each other and holding delicate bellflowers in their mouths. Sloane in 1843 and renamed W J Sloane in 1852, this prestigious furniture and rug store was located in New York City and catered to the prominent, including the White House and the Breakers, and wealthy, including the Rockefeller, Whitney, and Vanderbilt families.
