Large Antique 19th Century Gold Gilt French Louis XVI Mirror with Crest

About the Item

This beautiful large mirror was made in Northern France at the end of the 19th century. The mirror frame has a pine base smoothened with gesso and decorated with plaster mesh reinforced ornaments. The piece has an arched top with an elaborate crest that features a central blazon flanked by acanthus, laurel garlands, and vases with fruits and flowers. The most elevated part of the frame is decorated with floral elements. Both left and right bottom are decorated with stylized acanthus. The whole mirror frame is gold leaf gilt. The gold leaf was finished in various ways to achieve different tones of gold. Some parts were polished to a high degree of gloss and metallic look. Other parts were slightly polished and patinated. The various gold colors give the mirror frame more depth and definition. The patina built up over the years gives the mirror a beautiful antique look. The mirror glass is authentic to the piece and it has a facetted edge that follows the contour of the mirror frame. The glass was silver nitrate silvered (no mercury silvered glass) and is in a good condition that matches the frame perfectly. The glass has a few hardly visible spots and one scratch in the silver backing. The glass is otherwise in perfect condition for a mirror plate over a hundred years old. The whole mirror is in good authentic condition. The mirror glass was removed from the frame and both frame and glass were gently cleaned. Over 100 years of dust was removed. A new period pine back cladding was added to protect the mirror plate. The piece is now ready for use.

Repaired: Small repairs to the right top outer side of the frame were done. Replacements made: The back cladding was damaged and it was replaced with a stained period pine cladding. Wear consistent with age and use.
