This is a pair of two mirrors made by Pierre Chapo in France in the 1970s, crafted from solid elm wood. The mirror boasts of exceptional durability and remarkable visual appeal. The construction of this mirror is meticulously detailed, with the wooden pieces seamlessly connected on the corners using bridle joints, ensuring structural integrity and an elegant aesthetic. Moreover, four mortise and tenon joints further enhance its stability, attesting to the superior craftsmanship employed in its creation. The natural drawings and patterns of the elmwood are beautifully preserved, adding depth and uniqueness to this remarkable piece. The miter-sawn edges, which elegantly taper outward on the sides while curving inward on the top and bottom, create a mesmerizing trompe l'oeil effect. This clever visual trickery engages the viewer, offering an intriguing and dynamic perspective. The mirrors are in very good condition, and each measures 43 x 43 cm.

Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
