Square modernist pinewood mirror, Sweden, 1970s
About the Item
Swedish 1970s mirror made from solid pinewood. Square model with a rustic aesthetic typical of the period. Two plastic fittings on the backside for easy wall mounting.
Pine is a common tree in forests all over Sweden, and it has traditionally been used for various purposes. In the peasant society, most furniture was made from pinewood since it was easily accessible and, not least, affordable. In the modernist era, most designers tended to use exclusive materials like teak and rosewood, imported from the other side of the globe. As a reaction to this, some architects started using pinewood already in the 1920s, creating robust and rather traditional pieces suitable for the growing number of sport cabins and recreational homes built in the country. This trend experienced a revival in the 1970s when unpainted pinewood was once again used in Swedish homes.
