Swedish Midcentury Oak Round wall Mirror Uno & Osten Kristiansson

About the Item

Uno and Osten Kristiansson round oak mirror by Luxus, Sweden, 1960s. This vintage oak mirror is designed by renowned midcentury Swedish designers Uno and Osten Kristiansson for Luxus in the 1960s. It is truly an exquisite and sought after piece. Uno was born in 1925, and Östen two years later in 1927. Little is known about their formative years, but it can be surmised that they spent their early years in southern Sweden, learning the furniture trade from their father who ran his own furniture business, Vittsjö Furniture (established in 1919), named after the Swedish village in which it was located. In 1950, Uno Kristiansson founded his own manufacturing company, Luxus, which was also situated in Vittsjö. He produced a range of products, including home and interior lamps, furniture and mirrors, that were designed by the two brothers. In the 1950s, the collections were launched nationally in Sweden, and internationally across Europe. In 1968, Luxus presented a collection of lamps with brightly colored textile shades that perfectly encapsulated the mood of the 1960s. They are said to have been designed by renowned Finnish textile artist Marjatta Metsovaara (1927-2014). It is speculated that in 1966, Östen took over his father’s business and renamed it Östen Kristiansson AB, which now operates under its original name, Vittsjö Möbelfabrik AB. It is unclear what was produced during this time, or if the company was separate from Luxus. Like many of their Scandinavian contemporaries, the Kristianssons favored teak in many of their designs, but did not shy from using glass, leather, plastic and acrylic. Standouts designs from the brothers include, the acrylic Plafo Ceiling Lamp (1950s), the opaline glass UFO Lamp (1950s)—which was made from acrylic in the 1960s, the Model 204 Hunting Chair (1954), and a series of minimalist mirrors from the 1960s that reflect the style of Jacques Adnet’s Circulaire Mirror (1950), which was originally produced by Hermès. From the 1970s, Luxus focused on the creation of lighting for public spaces, once again featuring models made from acrylic, with contrasting minimal wood details. Many online sources list the Arkitektura Lamp, Candus Lamp, Skulptura Lamp, Discus Lamp, Pinus Lamp, and Rustikus Lamp (all 1970s) as part of the Luxus repertoire, yet there are few concrete examples available of this collection, and our editors are working hard to confirm the authenticity of these models. Östen died in 2003, and is survived by his older brother. Today, their designs fetch high prices by vintage enthusiasts and design lovers looking to add some minimalist Scandinavian flair to their home. Made in a solid oak frame, this highly collectible mirror has a very detailed and rich grain, highlighted by its delicately crafted seems around its rim. Light and dark sections accent it round perimeter along with a new leather strap seamlessly incorporated into the frame that it easily hangs from, combine to give this vintage piece an elegant and modern look.

Uno & Östen Kristiansson Wood and Leather Swedish Wall Mirror for Luxus, 1960s
By Uno & Östen Kristiansson, Luxus Vittsjö
Located in Roma, IT
Amazing midcentury in teak with a leather hanging strap wall mirror. This astonishing item was designed by Uno & Östen Kristiansson for a Luxus production during the 1960s. The frame circulates the glass and is made out of different pieces of wood which were interlaced with each other, creating a beautiful variety of colours and textures. This piece is a magnificent example of the Swedish midcentury style and it is in excellent vintage condition. A great element for a midcentury living room, adding elegance and depth. Dimensions (cm): Diameter - 56 Depth - 4,7 Swedish brothers and designers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, known for their lighting and mirror designs, were particularly active between the 1950s and 1970s in Sweden. Prolific designers with very precise aesthetics - recognized as a characteristic of the modern Scandinavian style - did not leave us much biographical information, but their designs are highly appreciated by vintage lovers, and are now highly sought after in the vintage market. Uno was born in 1925 and Östen two years later. Not much is known about their formative years, but it can be seen that they initially lived in southern Sweden, learning the furniture trade from their father, who ran his own furniture company, Vittsjö Furniture (founded 1919) - who takes its name from the Swedish country where it was based. In 1950 Uno Kristiansson founded his own manufacturing company, Luxus, located in Vittsjö, with which he produced a series of products, including interior lamps, furniture and mirrors, designed together by the two brothers. In the 1950s the collections are launched in Sweden nationally, and internationally throughout Europe. In 1968 Luxus presented a collection of lamps with lampshades in brightly colored fabrics, which perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the 1960s, which are said to have been designed by the renowned Finnish textile artist Marjatta Metsovaara (1927-2014). It is rumored that in 1966 Östen took over his father's business and renamed it Östen Kristiansson AB, which today however operates under the original name, Vittsjö Möbelfabrik AB. It is not known for sure what was produced during this period, or if the company was separated from Luxus. Like many of their Scandinavian contemporaries, the Kristianssons favor teak in many of their designs, but also include glass, leather, plastic and acrylic in their work. Prominent designs by the brothers include the Plafo ceiling lamp (1950s) in acrylic, the UFO lamp (1950s) in opal glass - which was then produced in acrylic in the 1960s, the Model 204 Hunting Chair ( 1954), and a series of minimalist mirrors from the 1960s that reflect the style of Jacques Adnet's Circulaire Mirror (1950), originally produced by Hermès. Since the 1970s, Luxus has focused on creating lighting for public spaces, again using acrylic models, with contrasting minimal wood details. Many online sources include in Luxus's repertoire list: Arkitektura Lamp, Candus Lamp, Skulptura Lamp, Discus Lamp...
