19th C. French Bronze Figure of " La Fortune" by Auguste Moreau-Vauthier

$13,500

About

A 19th century French Patinated Bronze Model Depicting “La Fortune” by Augustin Jean Moreau-Vauthier (1831-1893). Fortuna is depicted as a classically draped maiden holding aloft a cornucopia in one hand, and a ship’s rudder held close to her side in the other hand. The goddess with flowing windswept robes is raised on a pinwheel which in turn is set on a half globe. The cornucopia is where plenty flows from, the ship’s rudder steers fate, the globe symbolizes chance while the wheel symbolizes that luck, good or bad, never lasts. Signed: Moreau-Vauthier Inscribed: F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris and with the A. Collas pastille Circa 1880 Dimensions Height: 34″ (86 cm) Width: 7.5" (19 cm) Depth: 12" (30 cm) Augustin Jean Moreau-Vauthier was known as a skilled ivory carver and had collaborated with Jean-Léon Gérome on the celebrated Danseuse à la pomme (Ancient Dancer). He joined the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1850 in the studio of sculptor Armand Toussaint. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1857 and presented the present model in bronze in 1879. The model was so successful that Barbedienne edited it in four sizes.
