About the Item

Ceremonial twin beds, France, circa 1860- 1875 A pair of magnificent, solid gilt bronze beds, Louis XVI style, complete with medallions, cherubs, bows. that sort of luxurious piece of furniture, would have been presented on a velvet covered stand, both beds under the same pelmet complete with dramatic bed hangings... The absolute luxury and glamour of those beds is typical of the 19th c. The wooden base, the mattress and bedstead are entirely covered with a ground of satin applied with ruché of silk tulle. The internal cross bars are unadorned, plain gilt bronze, without the swirl decor. All the gilt bronze pieces have been cleaned, the wooden parts re-upholstered. The natural latex, silk and cashmere mattress, is topped by a goose down mattress. Fully dismountable. Twin beds are an innovation of the 1860s Lit de parade, France, vers 1875 Ce meuble de luxe, offre la particularité, d'avoir une structure entièrement en bronze doré. Il était très probablement présenté sur une estrade en étoffe assortie, les deux lits réuni sous un même baldaquin aux tentures théâtrales, tout cela sous une hauteur sous plafond, avoisinant les 5 ou 6 m. L'iconographie reprend les thèmes louis XVI, des cassolettes aux amours, sans oublier les médaillons ornés de rubans...Mais le gigantisme du lit appartient au 19ème s. Le socle en bois, formant sommier, le matelas et la tête de lit sont entièrement gainé de satin blanc recouvert d'un drapé et ruché en tulle de soie... Les traverses intérieures sont sans ornements. Ces pièces ont entièrement été nettoyées et restaurées, les matelas faits sur mesure, se compose d'un matelas, soie, cachemire, latex naturel, et d'une couchette en duvet de plumes d'oie. Les lits double font leur apparition en France vers 1860. Complètement démontable.
