American Four Poster "Field" Bed w/ Arched Canopy, Carved & Turned Posts, c 1815

About the Item

A handsome bed made of maple wood that is stained and painted, and called a "field" bedstead because of the framework on the top of the four posts which has an arched form resembling a field tent. The bed's headboard has two downward scrolls, with four vase-and-ring turned posts; with the two foot posts having a carved pineapple design, carved acanthus leaves and a heavy spiral reeding. All posts end in a vase-and-ring turned foot. American, circa 1810. Measurements: 55 1/4" wide x 79 1/8 " long x 82 1/2" high to top of canopy Approximating a full-size, this bed takes a custom mattress, together with a custom box spring (which can be ordered from us, if needed). At 72", length is 3" shy of a standard full length which is 75"; the width is a full-size mattress width of 54". Mattress should be thin & topped with memory foam for added comfort. The bed rails sit at 25" from the floor. If the mattress were to rest on the bed rails, ideally the mattress shouldn't exceed a height of more than 5". The height from the floor to the top of the mattress would then be 30", and would leave most of the headboard in view. Custom box: 47 1/2" wide x 72" long (can be provided by us) Custom mattress: 54" wide x 72" long (can be provided by us) Box will fit within the side rails; mattress will extend over and rest on the rails. Mattress is just short of a standard full-size, but will work with full-size bed linens.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Original finish, w/ original bed bolts. Square nuts to bed bolts were re-threaded for tighter fit. Bed wrench used to tighten bolts comes w/ the bed. There are 3 bed bolt covers missing, two on the back posts & 1 on the right side of the carved post.
