About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare original circa 1780 English hand carved Mahogany four post bed. These beds are about as rare and collectable as they come, the frame is all original, it has beautifully carved and fluted columns which wouldn't look out of place in a grand palace The woodwork has been cleaned waxed and polished, it will have the original patina and so on throughout, we have not refinished it specifically to keep the period patina Dimensions Height:- 203cm, 154.5cm headboard, 85cm footboard Depth:- 152.5cm Length:- 214cm Inside Dimensions Divan base height:- 59.5cm Depth:- 138.5cm Length:- 198cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point. This item is available for collection from our Pulborough warehouses RH20 1DF. We are a privately owned family ran business founded in Wimbledon SW19 and now based in Pulborough RH20. We specialise in finding, restoring very fine luxury antique leather seating, along with every single other type of antique ranging from the 16th century to the 20th century. CONDITION Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description pertaining to the condition. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of creasing and wear, we recommend annual waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Antique Four Poster Bed

A fine late 18th Century large Dutch four-poster bed with exceptional posts and ealy 19th century Italian carved giltwood swans. The posts with well carved elements: neoclassical urns, capitals, carved turnings and vase sections; their most attractive part is the boxwood and mahogany lined inlay which we haven't seen on English 18th beds. In addition, unusally, the rails are designed to be seen and made in mahogany and framed with carved and plain astragal beads. Good sturdy construction, fixed together with steel bolts and will dismantle for shipping. Needs new drapery hangings and the white fabric around the end posts & headboard should be cleaned or replaced. For the new mattress, we would recommend a box spring mattress with a well (height is saved with part of the box mattress fitting between the rails) and a second mattress on top. But you could also fit lathes and just have the top mattress with cut out corners to fit around the posts: norris bedding custom make such mattresses. This bed originally had fabric around the top but for an additional cost we could make a wooden cornice...
