Pair of rosewood nightstands SC-50 by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani 1960s

About the Item

This pair of nightstands were designed by Italian architect, interior designer and professor Claudio Salocchi for Sormani in 1962. They are catalogued as model SC-50, also known as "Sir" and "Madam". They are not necessarily nightstands: they are also meant to be used as side tables, in the same room or even in different environments. Both made in rosewood and wood with rosewood veneer, the are two versions of the same piece: one designed with a drawer, the other without. Both pieces have been professionally restored, the tops have been refinished. The brass handle has a charming patina. The collaboration of Salocchi with Sormani was fruitful and led to several design pieces that challanged the public blending classic and radical elements. Often compared to the coeval works by Gianfranco Frattini for Bernini, Salocchi's furniture has a more esperimental vein, that will lead to powerful and iconic pieces. Salocchi's work is being increasingly collected, especially after some recent retrospectives about his work as designer. This tables will make a wonderful feature in a bold master bedroom, as well as in an entry, or a living.
