Pair of Giltwood Architectural Corinthian Columns in Grand Tour Style

About the Item

A nicely carved pair of 19th century Grand Tour period giltwood souvenirs of fluted columns with Corinthian capitals.Now mounted on contemporary acrylic bases with a back channel for lamp wiring if so desired . Presents very well and in charming distress with rubbing and losses to the gilding ,the carving and fluting .Long time and use factors . Worn but sturdy .dirt , grime . The bases are : 6 inch square .85 inch thick or tall The giltwood columns with slight variation between the two are: 16 inch tall 2.75 diameter or diagonal( across the capital) The Grand Tour was for aristocratic young men (generally )as an educational right of passage to Italy. While the practice began in the late seventeenth century, it flourished particularly in the later half of the nineteenth century with the proliferation of rail transportation. The Grand Tour allowed the artistic appreciation of the classical past as well as the triumphs of the Renaissance.
