18th Lacquered Samurai Jingasa Hat with Misima Clan Crest

About the Item

A rare and historically significant lacquered Jingasa—a domed hat worn by samurai and their retainers—dating to the mid-Edo period (18th century). This lightweight wood hat is finished in deep black lacquer and features a boldly rendered gold clan crest (kamon) on the crown: the Mitsu-Kasa mon (三つ傘紋), depicting three open umbrellas arranged symmetrically. The Mitsu-Kasa mon is a rare and visually striking crest, symbolizing protection, refinement, and ceremonial dignity. It was used by several provincial samurai families during the Edo period, often as a replacement crest (kaemon) reflecting localized identity and service. Jingasa like this one were both practical protective gear and strong symbols of social status and loyalty. The refined lacquerwork and elegant proportions reflect the disciplined aesthetics of the samurai class. The surface shows expected signs of wear and abrasions, consistent with its age and use. A compelling piece for collectors of samurai armor, Japanese militaria, or historical design.
