Pair of Antique English Naval Cannon
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
Pair of antique English naval cannon each with a tapering three stage barrel flanked by plain trunnions, with a knob shaped cascabel button before a shaped rectangular raised vent and ending in a 3 1/2” bore muzzle, enclosing a removable conforming wood plug, circa 1800. Stood upon a naval type bronze-mounted four wheeled wooden carriage, including its wedge shaped quoin with knob handle. The Earls of Lonsdale, Lowther Castle, Cumbria, presumably by descent to Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), until sold by his heir and brother, Lancelot, 6th Earl, as part of the contents of Lowther Castle, Maple & Co. Ltd./Thomas Wyatt, Tuesday 14 April 1947 and two following days, lot 558: ‘A pair of Old Gun Metal Cannons on teakwood carriages, 3ft. 6in. long’. Mrs. P.M. Adie-Shepherd, sold Christie’s, London, 29 May 1970, lot 96. Lowther Castle is a castellated mansion built by Robert Smirke between 1806 and 1814 for William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844). It was constructed on the foundations of the former 17th century family seat, Lowther Hall, but it was only in the early 19th century that it was afforded the name ‘castle’ in keeping with the Europe-wide fashion for romanticism and which was promoted by influential characters such as William Beckford at Fonthill Abbey, Wiltshire in England and by the writer Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford, Roxburghshire, Scotland. While it’s not known when these naval cannon were acquired for Lowther they would have been entirely fitting in the castle or its approaches and it’s likely that they were in place soon after the castle was completed, or perhaps acquired later by the 5th Earl. A tantalising possibility is that the cannon were originally aboard the East Indiaman Lowther Castle which was active in the early 19th century. HUGH CECIL LONSDALE, 5TH EARL OF LONSDALE (1857-1944) AND THE DEMISE OF LOWTHER CASTLE In 1882 at the age of 25 Hugh Lonsdale (1857-1944) unexpectedly inherited the earldom and with it the extensive Lonsdale estate, including tens of thousands of acres of Cumberland and Westmorland and coalfields at Whitehaven. However, despite his spectacular inherited wealth – he was suddenly one of the wealthiest men in England, over the course of his lifetime he managed to decimate the family fortune. He led a full and colourful life, one of adventure and luxury. An early intrepid escapade took place in July 1888 when, as part of an expedition called the Scotch Naturalist Society, he set embarked on horse sleigh...

16th Century Spanish or Italian Baroque Wrought Iron Nails and Furniture Mounts
Located in Stamford, CT
Group of 16th century (or earlier, possibly Gothic) Spanish or Italian wrought iron furniture mounts. These hand-wrought bosses and nails show incredible workmanship. These would have been used to decorate - and to structurally hold together an early chest or casket. The four geometric bosses beautifully made, eight ounces each without the nail! The nails are works of art in themselves, with their heavy geometric heads. Also two round bosses with the nail integral to the piece, one a mushroom form, the other like a parasol. And a single hand-wrought double sided nail. Great group of early iron. Provenance: Frances Pratt, Writer, Artist, Collector. New York City. Approximate sizes: 4 bosses 4.625 inches square 11.75 cm Round bosses 3 inches diameter the larger 2.5 the smaller 7.6/ 6.35 cm 4.5 in high 11.4 cm 5 nails...

Stunning Late 19th Century Campaign or Travelers Desk Attr. to Thomas Potter
By Thomas Potter
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique quarter-sawn, two piece oak campaign desk. This may very well be the most beautiful and interesting campaign desk you will ever be able to acquire. The architectural design, the quality of the materials AND of the make, the combination of the striking colors and its overall look and feel is, in one word, awesome. We cannot think of a single company in existence in the world today who would put such an effort into creating one single and unique piece of furniture. We could have posted 30 images (which is not possible) and you still would not have seen all the fine details and 'gadgets' that make this desk the interesting and marvelous piece that it is. Especially when displayed in the way it is in image one, it will make everyone want to stop and look at this desk. It simply is difficult not to want to. Used by a high ranked officer, this top of the line desk would have cost a small fortune and it would have been taken from one campaign posting to the next. The chest on top can be fully closed and it has a perfect working lock and key (all original). The perfect brass handles on either side makes the chest easier to carry. Never easy though, because it has got some significant weight to it. Apart from minor bending of the desktop (best seen when closed. . .see image7), an incomplete leather inside in the lid (see image 15) and a cracked, but glued white tile (for which we do not know the purpose. . .image 3), this piece is of museum quality. The solid, tiger oak bottom half too is as stabile as the day it was made and it is in amazing condition. It comes with a mint drawer (both inside and out) and it too has a perfect working lock with the original key. The extra tier with the gallery of hand turned pillars makes this fine design open and spacious and it too is of wonderful quality and condition. Some of the finest details are on the inside of the stationary box-like chest. It is the quality in the design, the workmanship, the expensive materials, the attention to detail, the completeness, the execution and, finally, the timeless beauty, that makes us believe that this desk could only have been made by Thomas Potter...

Antique and Vintage Arms, Armor and Weapons

Arms, armor and weapons harken back to history and have the power to transport viewers to another era. Every civilization has had its history of warfare directly influenced by the design of its arms, armor and weapons.

Although designed to be functional, antique and vintage arms, armor and weapons can add gravity to a room when they are displayed. Their beauty stems from their raw utilitarianism. More ornate and decorative pieces can bring elegance to a space. Neoclassical arms can add a little culture and excitement to your home. Some pieces are made of precious metals, such as gold or silver, and can incorporate engraving, encrusting or painted details.

It is common for armor to be displayed in studies, libraries and dens where the historical value of these pieces is given space for contemplation and can complement the mood of such a room. There are plenty of excellent case-piece options that allow for collections to be stored and presented in a tasteful, organized way. (Any furnishing that is unupholstered and has some semblance of a storage component may be properly termed a case piece.)

Browse 1stDibs for collectible antique and vintage arms, armor and weapons to display in your home. There are historically accurate pieces ranging from ancient weapons to more modern designs.
