About the Item

color print from the 1950s depicting a Macchi M5 hydrocracker built in Varese by the Anonima Macchi-Nieuport company, which later became Aeronautica Macchi. Mounted on faesite and glass spport with hooks. Good condition, a few stains. Measurements cm 60x2x29 - inches23.6x0.7x11.4 This seaplane first flew in 1917 and was built by engineers Carlo Felice Buzio and Luigi Calzavara. These are aircraft used by maritime patrol squadrons and as escorts for naval convoys, some times they were embarked on the seaplane support ship Giuseppe Miraglia. Toward the end of World War I, these seaplanes were also used by the U.S. Navy. When the Regia Marina was established in 1923 65 M5 seaplanes were still in service, then were scrapped in later years. Wingspan 11.90 meters, length 8 meters, 160 hp Isotta Fraschini engine, maximum speed 189 kmh with a range of 3 hours and 40 minutes. Designed by Giorgio Bigozzi and colored by Massimo Jacoponi both students in the postwar period of the Rome Art School.
