About the Item

A large model of a TSR2 fighter plane designed by British Aircraft Corporation 1958 -1964. A rare example of a TSR2 was developed between the late 1950s to 1964 for the Royal Airforce. The body is Aluminium which has been silver plated but still shows traces of original condition with slight pitting to leading surface. About the aircraft; It was designed to penetrate a well defended forward battle area and then attack high value targets in the rear with nuclear or conventional weapons. There were only 3 ever built by BAC at a development cost of £22 million pounds and this proved a bridge too far with a new labour government and it led to controversial decision to scrap the program in 1965. This was also the year of the final test flights speeds of Mach 1 .12 & sustained at 200 ft above the Pennines. Another Criticism was regarding the undercarriage and complex landing gear, there was a vibration they were never able to fully eliminate completely. Although not to quite the same specifications, the TSR2 was powered by Olympus engines which would also be used by Concord and would begin test flights within the following 3 years. Dimensions; Base width - 10”. Wingspan - 11 1/4”. Plane, nose to tail 25 1/2”. Total length 28” Stand is a later addition.
