Art in Flower: Finding Inspiration in Art and Nature

About the Item

In Art in Flower, Lindsey Taylor introduces an original take on floral design that teaches us to see the world anew Based on Lindsey Taylor's popular Wall Street Journal column, Flower School, on its surface this book demonstrates how Taylor creates stunning but achievable floral arrangements inspired by works of art. Riffing on works by a diversity of artists across mediums, periods, and styles, including Alice Neel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julie Mehretu, Sheila Hicks, Willem de Kooning, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Stella, Salman Toor, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Kerry James Marshall, among many others, Taylor inspires readers to interpret the palettes, compositions, brushstrokes, and mood of the art in flowers, and shares florists' trade secrets for building beautiful arrangements. Through this meditative practice of looking intently at art and nature, readers learn, in the words of David Hockney, "to really look" and to really see the world. Lindsey Taylor is a garden designer and floral stylist based in upstate New York. Prior to founding her design studio, Taylor was for over a decade a floral expert, writer, and editor for several publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living, Domino, Garden Design, T Magazine, and Architectural Digest. Deborah Needleman is a writer and editor who has served as editor-in-chief of WSJ. Magazine, creator of the newspaper's lifestyle section Off Duty, editor-in-chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and founding editor of Domino.

  • Rooms with a History Interiors and Their Inspirations
By Rizzoli International Publications, Ashley Hicks, Christian Louboutin
    Located in New York, NY
Inspirational and visually on trend, Ashley Hicks's latest work is a pattern book for the 21st century. Offering insights and revelations, Hicks's own exquisitely quirky and colorful historicist interiors are discussed with designs from the recent and faraway past. Ashley Hicks has created a mix of manifesto, souvenir album, and confession in this collection of noteworthy rooms--featuring his own one-of-a-kind interiors along with rooms that have inspired him. The manifesto aspect is rather limited, since Hicks is not a great believer in aesthetic rules or the value of so-called good taste, but as a souvenir album, it charts Hicks's personal creative journey of the last few years, illustrated with photographs of some favorite historical interiors and objects that represent a mixture of source material and inspiration. The book's twelve chapters reveal Hicks's creative process, how he approaches different themes in his own interiors, furniture designs, and works of art, and how these themes can be applied to the works of others. Such subjects as flowers, color, layers, form, pattern, and memory are presented in the context of actual projects. Historical and recent interiors are discussed for their decorative value--notable rooms and architecture include the Pantheon in Rome; Emperor Maximilian's tomb in Innsbruck; the Royal Pavilion, Brighton; and the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Hicks has created a book for devotees of decorating and the history of interior design. About the author Ashley Hicks is a British author, architect, interior and furniture designer, and photographer. He is the son of Lady Pamela Hicks and the legendary decorator David Hicks. His personal Instagram profile has amassed over 200,000 followers. Christian Louboutin is a celebrated French shoe designer.

  • Brooklyn Arcadia: Art, History, and Nature at Majestic Green-Wood
    By Rizzoli International Publications
    Located in New York, NY
The New York City treasure, newly photographed, is revealed as garden in the city, repository for memory, and a place for repose, inspiration, and delight. Green-Wood is a living cemetery that brings people closer to the world by memorializing the dead even as it embraces the art, history, and natural beauty of New York. Founded in 1838 and now a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood was one of the first rural cemeteries in America. By the early 1860s, it had earned an international reputation for its beauty, attracting 500,000 visitors a year, second only to Niagara Falls as the nation’s greatest tourist attraction. Crowds flocked here to enjoy family outings in the finest of first-generation American landscapes. Green-Wood’s popularity helped inspire the creation of public parks, including New York City’s Central and Prospect parks. Green-Wood is 478 spectacular acres of hills, valleys, glacial ponds, and paths, throughout which exists one of the largest outdoor collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century statuary and mausoleums. Four seasons of beauty offer a peaceful oasis to visitors, as well as its 570,000 permanent residents, including Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Louis Comfort Tiffany. At once a celebration and an invitation, the book ranges from a consideration of the natural landscape in which it is set to a close look at its architecture, statuary, symbols, typography, birds and fauna, trees, and typography. About The Author Andrew Garn is a fine art and editorial photographer whose recent books for Rizzoli include New York Deco...

  • Finding Home The Houses of Pursley Dixon
    By Rizzoli International Publications
    Located in New York, NY
Author Ken Pursley and Jacqueline Terrebonne, Foreword by Suzanne Kasler In their first book, acclaimed architects Ken Pursley and Craig Dixon explore how to create gracious homes with welcoming entryways, soulful interiors, inviting porches, and ebullient gardens. Founded on the simple principle “Build beautiful things,” the architectural team of Pursley Dixon, like populist architects Bobby McAlpine and Jeff Dungan, is known for blending elements of tradition with a modern lifestyle. In Finding Home, they share 15 stunning houses in three distinct styles: rustic mountain escapes, dreamy retreats by the water, and elegant houses in town. Each house has its own thoughtful visual narrative, but all are connected on an innate and authentic level by their sense of proportion, attention to detail, and a marvelous affinity with nature, displayed in their soothing neutral palettes, oversize windows that bring the outdoors in, and natural materials such as rough-hewn stone and unfinished wood. Little touches of humanity await discovery, such as a sleeping nook perched right out into the highest branches of a tree. These eccentricities and secrets add to the distinctly Southern sense of warmth and refuge these homes provide, homes whose open interiors and majestic porches easily accommodate family and gatherings. Featuring their own interior design work as well as that of acclaimed decorators such as Suzanne Kasler, Phoebe Howard, and Circa Interiors...
