Christmastide: Its History, Festivities and Carols, by William Syndys, 1852

About the Item

Syndys, William. Christmastide: Its History, Festivities and Carols. London: John Russell Smith, [nd, 1852]. Illustrated with hand-colored engravings. Octavo. Bound in full brown polished calf with leather tooling to boards and spine, gilt titles and tooling to the spine. New archival slipcase with gilt candle stamp. Presented is an attractively bound printing of Christmastide: Its History, Festivities and Carols by William Synds. The book was published in 1852 in London by John Russell Smith. It is illustrated throughout with hand colored plates and numerous in-text vignettes and is beautifully bound in full brown polished calf leather with lovely Christmas-theme holly tooling and gilt titles to the spine. Christmastide is a collection of essays detailing the early traditions of Christmas in England. Syndys explores the earliest Christmas customs, from the monarchy to the landed gentry, all in great detail. He includes 42 carols, 12 printed tunes with music and text, and two plays, “A Mock Play” and “Christmas Play of St. George and the Dragon.” William Sandys (1792-1874) was a British antiquarian and writer. His first book, Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern, was published in 1833. The book was a compendium of historical and ancient carols he acquired and found through extensive research, and was published for the scholarly market. The book marked the first appearances of many now-classic English carols, including "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen", and "The First Noel", and contributed to the mid-Victorian revival of the holiday. His second book, Christmastide, was intended more for the popular market, with several of the most popular carols from his book set to music. Anyone interested in how the Christmas customs and songs we now practice and sing came to be, as well as the story behind many long forgotten, will find this book fascinating. CONDITION: Octavo. Bound in full brown polished calf with leather tooling to boards and spine, gilt titles and tooling to the spine. Gilt edge. Red ribbon page marker. Stunning hand colored illustrations throughout. Paper is healthy with only light toning. New archival cloth slipcase with gilt candle stamp.

  • "In Through The Back Door" by William S. Phillips, WWII Themed Lithograph, 1981
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented, is an exciting 1981 color lithograph by William “Billy” Phillips. Titled Through the Back Door, the lithograph depicts an American P-47 Thunderbolt pursuing a Luftwaffe bomber on the famous D-Day of WWII. Also referred to as a “Jug,” the P-47 was the largest and heaviest fighter aircraft powered by only one reciprocating engine. It was armed with four machine guns on each wing making it lethal for ground attacks. The busy scene focuses on the diving P-47 with “Miss Behave” painted on the side, but is full of action throughout the work. Providing a sense of movement, the background is blurred with multiple airplanes both in flight and on the ground. Fire and smoke billow from the field putting the viewer in the middle of the dramatic scene. The artist, William “Billy” Phillips is a renowned aviation and landscape artist. He is well-recognized and has received many awards for his artwork. Early in his career, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordinian Air Force as an artist and later served as the U.S. Combat Artist. The U.S. awarded Phillips the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association’s Americanism Medal. The celebrated artist additionally won the Art History Award twice and is one of the few individuals to be exhibited in a solo show at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. • Memoirs of General William T. Sherman, First Edition, Two-Volume Set, 1875
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Sherman, William T. Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman, Written By Himself. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1875. First edition. In two volumes. Rebound in quarter blue leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt titles to the spine, new marbled endpapers. New custom archival cloth slipcase with Sherman portrait inlay. Presented is a first edition printing of The Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman. This two volume book set was published by D. Appleton and Company, in New York, in 1875. It is presented here, rebound in striking quarter blue leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt titles to the spine, new marbled endpapers, and a custom archival cloth slipcase to fit both books. Ten years after the end of the Civil War, Sherman became the first General to publish his memoirs of that period. He began writing his account in 1872 and the two volumes were published by D. Appleton and Company in the spring of 1875. According to the publisher’s prospectus, the two volume set was originally offered in four different bindings, including fine blue cloth, green cloth, full sheepskin, and half blue moroccan leath. Sherman explains his motivations for writing in the preface of Volume I: “Nearly ten years have passed since the close of the civil war in America, and yet no satisfactory history thereof is accessible to the public;…. What is now offered is not designed as a history of the war, or even as a complete account of all the incidents in which the writer bore a part, but merely his recollection of events, corrected by a reference to his own memoranda, which may assist the future historian when he comes to describe the whole, and account for the motives and reasons which influenced some of the actors in the grand drama of war.” His two volume account touches briefly on his early life, including his time at West Point, his life in and out of the army in Florida, California, New York, Kansas, and Louisiana. Yet the bulk of the writing is focused on the Civil War. “Written with the propulsive energy and intelligence that marked his campaigns” his memoir provides firsthand accounts of Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the infamous Atlanta campaign, and his march to the sea through Georgia and the Carolinas. The memoir describes striking incidents and anecdotes and collects dozens of his incisive and often outspoken wartime orders and reports. Throughout it all, Sherman is quite frank in describing the rights and wrongs of the campaigns he saw, writing without much concern for the feelings or experiences of others. This complex self-portrait of an innovative and relentless American general provides for a vivid read and an exceptional Civil War account. CONDITION: Good condition. First edition. In two volumes. Beautifully restored and rebound. Quarter blue leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt titles to the spine, new marbled endpapers. Paper is okay to good, with toning as to be expected. Scattered spots and smudges. Inscribed twice by previous owner, inscription on the top of the Note page of Vol I and on the full title page of Vol II. Large "Military Map...
