Traditionally, a contact sheet has been a working document, annotated for edits and decision making, and seldom displayed, but as William Klein explored the form in a series of films on the process of different photographers, allowing them to talk through their choices as the camera panned over contact sheets, he began to see the creative possibilities in the form. Having trained early in painting with Fernand Léger, Klein never abandoned painting, and the creative leap of applying enamel paint to his own contact sheets in the swift gestural forms and notations of a photographer gave him a way to unite photography and painting in a style undeniably all of his own. With hints of abstract expressionism and pop collage, Klein's painted contacts are inventive, playful and brilliantly capture his influences in painting and his home city of New York. An essential photobook.
