David, Francois-Anne The Antiquities of Herculaneum 12 Volumes Period Bindings
About the Item
The Antiquities of Herculaneum with their explanations in French. Published, Paris, 1781-1803. This profusely illustrated set consists of 12 volumes retaining their original marbled calf bindings with ribbed spines, the pages with gilt edges and the covers framed with tooled gilt designs.
This is the rare first edition of the Antiquities of Herculaneum, with the explanatory text by Sylvain Maréchal. It contains hundreds of beautiful engravings by Francois-Anne David representing the many antiquities and frescoes discovered in Herculaneum a town only 11 miles from Pompeii. Both were destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
