Rebound in ¼ brown leather and cloth boards with raised bands, gilt tooling, gilt titles to the spine. Presented with a new archival slipcase. Presented is a first edition printing of Eulogies and Orations on the Life and Death of General George Washington, First President of the United States of America. The book was published in 1800 in Boston by Manning & Loring. This book features the signature of “John Carter” on the title page, most likely the same “John Carter, Boston” noted in the list of “Subscriber's Names” printed in the rear of the book. The book is presented rebound in ¼ brown leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt titles to the spine and new archival slipcase. This is an early and important collection of the eulogies, speeches, and written tributes delivered following the death of George Washington, by prominent statesmen, close friends, and prominent writers of the time. The compilation starts with General Henry Lee’s eulogy, a 3,500-word speech delivered to Congress on December 28, 1799, in which he famously said Washington was "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” Like many of the eulogies and speeches collected in this work, Lee praised Washington's contribution and dedication to the nation, and called upon citizens to act following Washington’s example. Other orations, in order, are those of G. R. Minot, J. M. Sewall, Gouverneur Morris, Thomas Paine, John Brooks, David Ramsay, George Blake, Fisher Ames, Timothy Bigelow, John Davis, William Linn, Jeremiah Smith, Joseph Blyth, Isaac Parker, J. M. Mason, William Jackson, C. P. Sumner, Josiah Dunham, and J. T. Kirkland. Collectively these speeches highlighted Washington’s military leadership during the Revolutionary War, his statesmanship as President, and his character as a model citizen. Together, they form an incredible record of the reverence with which Americans viewed George Washington’s life and career. CONDITION: Very good condition. First edition. 8vo. Rebound in ¼ brown leather and cloth boards with raised bands, gilt tooling, gilt titles to the spine. Presented with a new archival slipcase. Interior pages are healthy, save even toning and scattered foxing, as expected with age. Contemporary ink ownership signature “John Carter’s” on the title page. Four pages of printed “Subscribers’ Names” in the back of the book. Book Dimensions:8 5/8" H 5 5/8" W x 1 3/8" D. Slipcase Dimensions: 9 1/8" H x 5 7/8" W x 1 3/4" D.
