This is a signed, first edition of one of the seminal works in the field of science fiction, Fahrenheit 451. First published in 1953, Fahrenheit 451 remains Bradbury’s most acclaimed work, with more than four million copies in print. In 1951, Bradbury combined two of his earlier short stories, "The Pedestrian" and "Bright Phoenix," into The Fireman, a short novella. The Fireman was published in the February 1951 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction. Bradbury's publisher at Ballantine Books then suggested that he expand the work to make into a novel, which evolved into Fahrenheit 451. The novel is a critique of what Bradbury saw as issues in American society of the Cold War era. "Frightening in its implications Mr. Bradbury’s account of this insane world, which bears many alarming resemblances to our own, is fascinating" (New York Times). “What is distinctive about Fahrenheit 451 as a work of literature is not what Bradbury says but how he says it… Bradbury’s evocative, lyrical style charges [the book] with a sense of mystery and connotative depth that go beyond the normal boundaries of dystopian fiction…It is the only major symbolic dystopia of our time” (Donald Watt). This copy is inscribed, dated, and signed in ink on the front free endpaper recto by Ray Bradbury. Inscription reads: "For Elaine! With Good Wishes from Montag’s Friend. Ray Bradbury. Nov. 14, 1974." CONDITION: First edition, first issue, octavo printing, with the words "Copyright, 1953 by Ray Bradbury" printed on the copyright page with no indication of later printing. In its original yellow-lettered red boards, which shows light edge wear. The dust jacket is original, in good condition, with price clipped, occasional small chipping and light creasing at edges. Book is inscribed, dated, and signed in blue ink on front free endpaper recto by Ray Bradbury. Inscription is legible and bolder on the word “Montag’s.” Housed in a beautiful red leather and cloth clamshell with decorative gilt spine and an image of the dust jacket on the cover.
