Smedley. "Only two numbers were published when the magazine came to an abrupt termination" (Cohn, Albert Meyer. George Cruikshank; a catalogue raisonné. New York, Collectors Editions, 1969; p. 63). Frank E. Smedley (1818 – 1864) was and English novelist and satirist who gained considerable repute and whose works were often illustrated by George Cruikshank. He was handicapped since childhood but managed to live a full creative life. In his article about Smedley for The Marlow Society website Hugh Griece underlines that "His physical malady had kept his intercourse with the world so restricted, that while his mind was full, strong and manly, his experiences of certain sides of life were as pure and unsullied. ... he "was perhaps one of the most remarkable instances of the triumph of mental vigour over bodily infirmity that the history of literature recalls ... who yet by an effort of the strong will and stout heart that were given him, made himself a name in literature and a place in society, and lived an object of tender regard and affectionate esteem among all his friends." (Griece, Hugh: The Marlow Society website article "Frank Smedley, a handicapped Victorian author."). Condition: Very Good.
